As electric cars grow in popularity, more and more car companies are releasing their own electric vehicles, growing the demand for charging station installations. This year, Porsche released their first electric vehicle, the Porsche Taycan! Because of this, ROS Electric was given the opportunity to install level 3 DC rapid chargers at Porsche’s Englewood, NJ location. Let’s take a closer look at this project and electric car charging station installation as a whole!
How to Install an Electric Car Charging Station
The installation process for your electric vehicle charging station is pretty straightforward, but you do need to consider the right team of expert technicians to assist you. Here’s a quick overview of the 3-step process.
1: Determine Readiness
Not all home and commercial spaces can support an electric vehicle charging station. As part of our installation process, we make sure that your home or commercial space meets all of the basic infrastructure requirements.
- Minimum of 300-500sq ft so 2 to 3 cars can park.
- An exclusive transformer that has all of the substation equipment including, plug-in nozzles, 33/11 KV cables, and circuit breakers for safety.
- Minimum of one charging kiosk with multiple charging points.
For Porsche of Englewood, we confirmed they met all of the requirements and began digging!
2: Purchase an EV Rapid Charger
There are 3 different types of EV rapid chargers to choose from. Level 1 requires a standard 120-volt wall outlet and adds 3-5 miles of range an hour. A level 2 requires 240-volts and charges 12-80 miles of range per hour. This requires a special installation because the voltage is higher than a standard outlet. Lastly, level 3 requires a direct current (DC) and charges 12-80 miles per minute. This level is only available for public charging stations.
Porsche of Englewood chose a Level 3 direct current (DC) rapid charger for their dealership. With this charger, the Porsche Taycan can reach full charge in 30 minutes!
